Describe the preparation

  • There is a brownish, well-demarcated tumor that has many grayish foci.

  • These foci may be psammoma bodies or necrosis.

  • There is blank ink on the edges of the slices. This ink is used to show the resection margin.

  • “Velvet-Like”, “fine” pattern.

  • The Thyroid Carcinoma can be found in the center and between the tumors we can see fibrosis.

What other types of Carcinomas Exist ?

  • 80% are Papillary tumors: good prognosis even if it metastasizes

  • 10% are Follicular tumors

  • 1-2% are Medullary tumors Neuroendocrine tumor

  • 1% are Anaplastic tumors: mainly effecting the elderly
