Plate boundaries

Also called plate margins, these are all of the parts of the world where one tectonic plate is next to another.

Constructive plate boundary

Also called a divergent plate boundary, a location where rising magma in the mantle cools, solidifies, and creates new crust as two tectonic plates slowly move apart.

Destructive plate boundary

Also called a convergent boundary, an area where tectonic plates are being carried towards each other.

Subduction

The process where a denser oceanic plate is forced underneath a continental plate as they move toward each other.

Collision boundary

A type of destructive plate boundary where two continental plates of roughly the same density crash head-on and crumple upwards.

Himalayas Mountain Range

The mountain range created by the collision force of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Conservative plate boundary

Also called a transform boundary, an area where two tectonic plates slide past each other in opposite directions or in the same direction at different speeds, conserving the crust.
