FRACTURES
A fracture is a break in the bone.
Closed/simple, Open/compound
TYPES OF FRACTURES
Closed/simple
fracture that does not break through/penetrate the skin
Open/compound
serious fracture in which broken bone or bones project through the skin
reduction, immobilization
Bone fractures are treated by
Reduction
Realignment of the bone
Comminuted
Bone breaks into many fragments.
Compression
Bone is crushed (i.e., osteoporotic bones)
Depressed
Broken bone portion is pressed inward.
Impacted
Broken bone ends are forced into each other.
Spiral
A ragged break occurs when excessive twisting forces are applied to a bone.
Greenstick
Bone breaks incompletely, much in the way a green twig
Dislocated shoulder
Occurs when your upper arm bone (humerus) pops completely out of its socket
Supracondylar Fracture
a break in the upper arm bone (humerus) just above the elbow joint
Radial Head Fracture
Colles’ Fracture
Most common fracture of the distal radius
Result from a fall on an outstretched hand (FOOSH).
Smith’s Fracture
Less common fracture of distal radius
Smith’s Fracture
Distal fragment isdisplaced volarly and proximally (apex dorsal)
Smith’s Fracture
inward fracture
Colles’s Fracture
Outward Fracture
Galeazzi’s Fracture
Radial shaft fracture at junction of middle and distal thirds with disruption of distal radioulnar joint
Pronated wrist
Distal radius and distal ulnar joint (DRU) disrupton
Monteggia’s Fracture
Fracture of ulnar shaft with dislocation of radial
Fall on outstretched, extended, and pronated
Benette’s Fracture
An intra-articular break at the base of the thumb’s first metacarpal bone that causes the joint to dislocate.
