Authoritarian government
A type of government where power is concentrated in the hands of one leader or a small elite, who impose their authority upon many aspects of citizens' lives.
Totalitarian government
A type of government that extends absolute control over individual attitudes and beliefs, often mobilizing the population towards one party's national aim.
Socialism
An economic system based on public ownership of economic resources and property, aiming to ensure wealth and equality. The community manages the economic system.
Communism
Similar to socialism, but with a central, controlling government providing citizens with basic necessities.
Monarchy
A form of government ruled by one person, known as a monarch, who holds their position either by divine right or hereditary succession.
Oligarchy
A type of government where power resides in a few self-interested elites.
Democracy
A form of government where the people have the power. People elect representatives to make decisions and create policies.
Parliamentary democracy
A system where elected legislators appoint a person to be the chief of government (e.g., United Kingdom).
Presidential democracy
A system where the people elect a president to be the chief of government and head of state (e.g., United States).
Direct democracy
A system where the people directly decide on laws and decisions, rather than electing representatives to decide for them (e.g., Ancient Athens).
Representative democracy
A system where people elect representatives to make decisions and create policies (e.g., United Kingdom & United States).
