A system that claims to be a liberal democracy, but is, in reality not. It's elections may not be free and fair, rights might be violated commonly, etc.

Emergency Legislation
War Measures Act
an Canadian legislation that gives the federal government emergency powers during wartime, including the right to detain people without laying charges. Used during WWI, WWII and the October Crisis
Internment of Japanese Canadians
Japanese Canadians were placed in camps because the government was afraid of spies and sabotage during WWII.
October Crisis (1970)
The Quiet revolution aimed at peacefully enhancing opportunities for Francophones. Unhappy with the slow results the FLQ was founded in 1963 and used bombing and armed robberies to further its goals. On Oct.5 they abducted James Cross, and then Pierre Laporte on the 10. Laporte was also murdered. On the 16 Trudeau enacted the War Measures Act.

Illiberal law that gave Hitler the powers of a dictator in !930s Germany
Patriot Act (2001)
Illiberal law that suspends individual legal and mobility rights in the USA post 9/11.
Bill C-51 Anti-Terrorism Act
law passed by the Harper government in 2015 that broadened the authority of government agencies such as CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Services) to share information about individuals with other agencies and countries, raising concerns about privacy and Charter rights
Public Works Protection Act
Law created in Ontario during the G20 Summit. Forced citizens of Toronto to submit to searches and show ID in downtown Toronto
Civil Disobedience
A form of political participation that reflects a conscious decision to break a law believed to be immoral and to suffer the consequences. Involves the right to dissent and peaceful assembly

Apartheid
A social policy or racial segregation involving political and economic and legal discrimination against non-whites. Laws are no longer in effect
Indian Act of 1876
Canadian law that controls all aspects of Indigenous life including "Indian Status", creation of Residential Schools, right to vote, right to practice traditional ceremonies and beliefs. Created a paternalistic relationship between the govt and indigenous people
White Paper
Pierre Trudeau. Proposed to eliminate treaties, the Indian Act and and everything else keeping Inuit and First Nations people distinct

Response to the White Papers from Indigenous leaders that fought for the continuation of collective rights
World Bank
A specialized agency of the United Nations that makes loans to countries for economic development, trade promotion, and debt consolidation. Its formal name is the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

IMF
Agency that provides short term loans for countries facing financial crisis. Structural Adjustment loans impose harsh conditions on the country receiving the loan.
