Lytic life cycle
The life cycle of a virus in which the virus is actively making more viruses, ultimately killing most host cells
Lysogenic
The life cycle of a virus in which the viral genome is inserted in the host cells genome; potentially becoming a permanent part of the host DNA
Retrovirus
A virus that uses RNA as its genetic material instead of DNA
Reverse Transcriptase
An enzyme used by retroviruses to convert their RNA genome into a DNA copy
Host Range
Those organisms which a virus is able to infect
Receptor Specificity
The idea that the specific shape of a cell's membrane protein (receptor) must compliment the specific shape of the protein the receptor is binding (as in a viral protein)
Gene Therapy
The use of engineered viruses to deliver normal versions of genes to replace missing or defective ones to correct genetic disorders
