Explain the pattern of reactivity as you go down group 7
The atoms get larger as you go down group 7
So the negative outer shell is further away from the positive nucellus
This means that the electrostatic force between the outershell and nucellus is weaker
So it is harder to gain an electron
What happens as you go down group 7 of the halogens?
Reactivity decreases
Atoms get bigger
They get darker
Boiling point and melting point increase
How do halogens bond to themselves?
Halogens exist diatonically so they bond to themselves with a covalent bond

How do halogens react with metals?
They create metal halides
How do halogens react with non metals?
They make a covalent bond
Why does the boiling point increase as you go down group7?
The boiling increases as you go down group 7 because the size of the atoms increase this means that they have a higher intermolecular force as you go down group 7.
The higher the intermolecular force is the more energy is needed for it to melt or boil
What is displacement?
When a more reactive halogen displaces a less reactive halogen from a compound
