“rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer’s lease hath all too short a date”

  • ‘rough’ → (adjective) shows irritation and unpleasantness and it shows how unlikeable winds are

  • ‘shake’ → (verb) intimidating and aggressive shows contrast towards the second half of the sentence

  • ‘darling buds of may’ → (phrase) contrasts to first part of the sentence, shows the lover (patron) shakespeare is talking about is more superior and they will always be there, they won’t get blown over by the ‘rough winds’ like the flowers. The lover will always be there as they are a friend.

  • ‘too short’ → (phrase) links to the first part of the quote talking about the lover lasting. 4 seasons, summer won’t last forever but the lover (patron) will always be there.

  • ‘too hot’ → (phrase) unpleasant and irritating. Causes anger and pain (burn). Opposite to the lover, the lover is pleasant.

  • ‘his’ → (pronoun) personifies the sun, shows it’s importance, refers to the sun as the ‘eye of heaven’. compares the lover to the sun, bright and radiant

  • ‘dimmed’ → (adjective) negative word, the sun loses it’s character in the second part of the quote. The sun does not shine forever- day and night (the sun goes down). light doesn’t last. But the lover will always shine and will always be bright.

  • final rhyming couplet → as long as humans live people will enjoy this poem and that will keep the lover alive.

  • ‘eyes can see’ → (phrase) if eyes can read this poem than love will last.

  • ‘this’ → (noun) plural for shakespeare’s poems. the repetition shows the importance and emphasizes the poems words and significance

  • ‘thee’ → (noun) links back to line one ‘shall i compare THEE’. Direct address, changes from talking about the lover to talking about the contemporary reader. shows that WE will benefit from reading this poem, links back to the importance and significance of the poem and it’s words
