Assigned Shift/Workday
The normal time period or shift schedule to which an employee is assigned to perform his/her duties.
Benefit Year
The 12-month period beginning September 1st and ending August 31st.
Calendar Year
The period beginning on January 1st and ending December 31st of each year.
City Business
Job responsibilities that require an employee be excused from the performance of regular duties to perform other city-related duties.
Court Related Absences
Leave to appear in a legal proceeding in response to a subpoena or summons, not to be confused with jury duty.
Wellness Leave
Up to eight (8) hours of time off authorized for annual physical examinations, health screenings, and other preventive health care appointments each benefit year.
Employee
All individuals performing duties for the City of Houston, including hired, appointed, full-time, part-time, temporary, permanent, classified, and non-classified employees.
Fiscal Year
The period beginning July 1st and ending June 30th of the following year.
Floating Holiday
A paid holiday granted each calendar year by City Council that must be taken in a single day increment or it is forfeited.
Form 48
The HFD form used for health care provider verification of an employee’s bona fide non-occupational illness, disease, injury, or wellness care appointment.
Guaranteed Holiday (GH)
The ability to utilize an approved set number of accrued holidays per fiscal year when advance notice and approval is given.
Health Care Provider
A Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy authorized by the state, or any other person determined by the Secretary of Labor capable of providing health-care services.
Holiday
Benefit days off with pay granted annually by City Council and referred to as a Deferred Holiday when used.
Jury Duty Leave
Paid leave granted to employees summoned to serve as a juror.
Military Benefit Year
The period beginning October 1st and ending September 30th of the following year.
Military Coordinator
A Human Resources employee who assists with Military or Urban Search and Rescue Leave paperwork relating to deployment or training.
Military or USAR Leave
Temporary or indefinite leave with or without pay to allow employees to serve in the military or attend required military functions.
Personal Leave
Hours of leave with pay granted to eligible employees based on sick leave usage (SICK, SFAM, FMLS) during the previous benefit year.
Vacation Leave
An accrued benefit that allows an employee time off, with pay, with prior approval and authorization.
Veteran
A person who served in the active U.S. military, naval, or air service and was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.
TRNG
The code utilized by District Chiefs for the remainder of a duty shift when an employee is relieved prior to their regularly scheduled shift change for training.
Re-Orientation Program (ROP)
Requirements found in I-47 for any classified employee absent from a field assignment in Operations for 180 days or longer.
CBUS
The code used to place an employee on city business when appearing for legal proceedings as a result of official duties with the Houston Fire Department.
Modified Sick Plan (MSP)
A plan where members are eligible for personal guaranteed leave based on the number of sick leave hours used in the prior benefit year.
VOTE
The code for up to two (2) hours of paid time off granted by a District Chief for an employee to participate in an election.
WELL
The code used for Wellness Leave sessions verified by a valid Form 48.
