Chemical Bond
The force of attraction between any two atoms in a molecule that holds them together.
Ionic Bonding
Bonding that occurs between a metal and a non-metal; involves the transfer of valence electrons.
Cation
Positively charged ion.
Anion
Negatively charged ion.
Formula Unit
The smallest unit of an ionic compound that retains its properties.
Chemical Formula
The combination of element symbols to represent a compound.
Valency
The number of bonds an atom can form.
Steps for Writing Formulae and Naming Ionic Compounds (Group I, II, or III metal and non-metal)
Write down the symbol of each atom and write the valency of each atom above it; Cross over the valency to the bottom of the opposite atom and write it as a subscript; Make sure that the total charge equals zero; Name the compound by keeping the name of the metal unchanged and changing the name of the non-metal to end with -ide.
Stock Notation
Method of indicating the valency of a transition metal using a Roman numeral in brackets.
Covalent Bonding
Bonding that occurs between two non-metals; involves the sharing of valence electrons.
Molecule
The compound that is formed when two non-metals covalently bond.
Prefix Naming System
Prefixes used to indicate the number of each type of atom present in a covalent compound.
Diatomic molecules
Molecules composed of two of the same atoms.
