Reference Map
A map designed to show general information, navigation routes, and the location of geographic places.
Political Map
A type of reference map that displays human-created boundaries such as states, countries, and capitals.

Physical Map
A type of reference map showing natural environmental features such as mountains, rivers, and deserts.

Road Map
A reference map displaying highways, roads, and streets used primarily for navigation.

Plat Map
A reference map that labels property lines and details land ownership within a specific area.

Thematic Map
A map designed to display spatial patterns, distributions, or qualitative and quantitative characteristics of specific data or phenomena.
Choropleth Map
A thematic map that uses various colors, shades of one color, or patterns to illustrate the spatial distribution and density of data across predefined areas.

Dot Distribution Map
A thematic map where each dot or symbol represents a specified quantity of a feature to indicate its specific location and spatial distribution.

Graduated Symbol Map
A thematic map that uses symbols of varying sizes to represent different data amounts, where larger symbols signify greater values and smaller symbols signify lesser values.
Isoline Map
A thematic map that connects points of equal value with lines to illustrate continuous spatial data variations, such as temperature, precipitation, or pressure.
Topographic Map
A specific type of isoline map that depicts changes in land surface elevation using contour lines or textured shading.

Cartogram Map
A thematic map in which the geographic size of regions (such as countries, states, or counties) is scaled or distorted according to a specific statistical variable, such as population or GDP.

Global Scale
A scale of map coverage or spatial analysis that depicts the entire world.
Regional Scale
A scale of observation focusing on supranational regions encompassing multiple countries (e.g., Latin America) or subnational regions within a country (e.g., Pacific Northwest).
National Scale
A scale of observation or spatial coverage focused on a single nation or country.
Local Scale
A scale of spatial observation focused on a localized region smaller than a country, such as a state, county, or city.
Large-Scale Map
A zoomed-in map showing a small geographic area with a high level of detail.
Small-Scale Map
A zoomed-out map depicting a large geographic area with a low level of detail.
Absolute Direction
Exact and precise direction defined by cardinal directions (North, South, East, West) that remain fixed regardless of position.
Relative Direction
Direction described using positional relationships relative to a observer or object, such as left, right, forward, or backward.
Absolute Distance
The precise physical measurement of space between two locations expressed in standard units such as miles, kilometers, or feet.
Relative Distance
A measurement of spatial separation based on travel time, monetary cost, or effort, dependent on mode of transportation and connectivity.
Clustered Pattern
A spatial distribution pattern in which objects or data points are gathered closely together in a concentrated group or agglomeration.
Linear Pattern
A spatial distribution pattern where features or data points are arranged in a straight line, commonly along geographic features like rivers or roads.
Dispersed Pattern
A spatial distribution pattern in which objects or data points are scattered or spread out over a wide area.
SADD
An acronym representing the four types of spatial distortion that occur on flat map projections: Shape, Area, Distance, and Direction.
Mercator Projection
A rectangular map projection originally designed for navigation that accurately shows directions and perpendicular latitude/longitude intersections, but severely distorts land mass area near the poles.

Peters Projection
An equal-area map projection designed to display accurate landmass sizes, though shapes become vertically or horizontally stretched and distorted near the poles.

Polar Projection
An azimuthal map projection centered on one of Earth's poles that shows accurate relative distances from the center, but distorts landmass area progressively further from the center.

Goode-Homolosine Projection
An interrupted map projection that preserves proper area and shape of landmasses by introducing gaps across ocean areas.

Robinson Projection
A compromise map projection with rounded outer edges that balances overall appearance by introducing only minor distortions across area, shape, size, and direction.
