Cells' Basic Needs
Access to oxygen, glucose, balanced fluids (water/electrolytes), and waste removal (e.g., carbon dioxide).
Oxygen Diffusion
The process by which oxygen molecules move from an area of high concentration (alveoli) to an area of low concentration (blood).
Hemoglobin
A protein in red blood cells that binds to oxygen molecules, enabling efficient oxygen transport in the bloodstream.
Oxyhemoglobin
The form of hemoglobin when it is bound to oxygen.
Ventricles
The two lower chambers of the heart; the right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs, and the left ventricle pumps blood to the body.
Right Ventricle
The chamber of the heart that pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs for oxygenation.
Left Ventricle
The chamber of the heart with thick walls that pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
Pulmonary Circulation
The movement of blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart.
Systemic Circulation
The movement of blood from the heart to all parts of the body and back to the heart.
Blood Pressure Reduction
The decrease in blood pressure from the right ventricle to the pulmonary veins, allowing for efficient gas exchange.
Capillaries
The tiny blood vessels where the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other substances takes place.
Gas Exchange
The process by which oxygen is taken up by the blood and carbon dioxide is released, primarily occurring in the lungs.
Importance of Two Pumps
Two ventricles allow different pressures for efficient blood circulation and optimal gas exchange.
Diffusion

Pressure in the Heart
The right ventricle generates lower pressure for the lungs, while the left ventricle generates higher pressure for systemic circulation.
