Scientific Method

A process used by scientists to find the answers to questions.

Hypothesis

A possible explanation that can be tested in an experiment.

Experiment

A controlled test to determine if a hypothesis is supported or refuted.

Variable

A factor that affects how a system works.

Independent Variable

(Experimental Variable) The variable changed in an experiment to test effects on the dependent variable.

Dependent Variable

The variable being tested.

Control Variables

(Constant) The variables you keep the same in an experiment for all parts of the experiment.

Observation

An act of recognizing and noting a fact or occurrence.

Inference

Conclusion that is reached based on our observations

Qualitative Data

Data based on written and spoken narratives such as interviews, case studies, and conversational analysis.

Quantitative Data

Data based on numbers and mathematical calculations (experiments, closed questions)
