Visual control zone definition and ideal zone for all around driving (good pavement, light to moderate traffic, good weather)

Visual Control Zone

A visual control zone is the distance ahead that you look while driving to identify hazards and make safe driving decisions.

There are 3 zones:

  1. Short-range: 4–6 seconds ahead

  2. Mid-range: 12–15 seconds ahead

  3. Long-range: 20–30 seconds ahead

Ideal Zone for All-Around Driving

With good pavement, light to moderate traffic, and good weather, the ideal visual control zone is the mid-range zone (12–15 seconds ahead).
