Privilege
A special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group, often unearned and based on social identity.
Intersectionality
The interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.
Assimilation
The process by which a person or a group's language and/or culture come to resemble those of another group, which can sometimes involve giving up one's original culture.
Acculturation
The process of cultural and psychological change that results following meeting between cultures, where individuals may adopt elements of a new culture while retaining aspects of their original culture.
Marginalization
The process of making a group or class of people less important or relegated to a secondary position.
Ally
A person who is a member of a dominant group (e.g., white, male, heterosexual) who works to dismantle oppression in their own personal and professional life.
Advocate
A person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause or policy.
Implicit Bias
Attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner.
Microaggression
A subtle, often unintentional, but hurtful comment or action directed at a member of a marginalized group that communicates hostile, derogatory, or negative messages.
Self-determination
The process by which a person controls their own life. In a broader sense, it refers to the right of a group to choose their own destiny.
