Of mice and men introduction
In John Steinbecks, ‘ Of mice and men’ written in the late 1930s during the econimcal crisis, follows the lives of 2 migrant workers, George and Lennie who move from job to job in serch of a better life. The novella takes place on a ranch in Soledad, with George and Lennie’s aspiration of owning a peiece of land during such a harsh era.
Of mice and men (Curlys wife) the idea of sexism
desires to be in the ‘pitchers’
through the use of color, Steinbeck portrays women to be dangrous creatures of deisre. Curly’s wife is decribed as “roughed lips”,”red mules” and “red ostrich feathers”, which proves women to be the object of mens desires
The colour red depicts dnger and evil
Steinbeck ostracizes Curly’s wife, by describing her as a ‘lousy tart',’god damn tramp”, poisen’ and “rattrap”, which proves that women were seen as no more than an object of a man desire
Women were more objectified and seen as mens property than a whole being. This is shown simply through the namelessness of curly’s wife, all she is seen to be is another part of the american dream that curly has attained.
Societal challanges that women faced in this era was bigoted and mysoginistic one.
Women were dehumanized.objectified and sexualised on thr basis of gender
of mice and men (the idea of the elusive american dream)
"every damn one of em’s got a little peice of land in his head. And never a god damn one of em’s ever gets it. Just like heaven.” Steinbeck applied the comparison between ‘heaven’ and ‘land’ to state the suggestion that god has abandoned ‘every god damn on of em’s’ and all hope is lost.Additionally, the constanst repetition of ‘damn’ and never shows how aggrived and hurt Crooks is that George and Lennie are no different to the hundreds of men Crooks has seen before.
