Air Pollution
The introduction of harmful gases into the air, leading to diseases and affecting vegetation. It may also change the global climate.
Smog
A thick, dirty fog formed by gases released into the air, commonly found over industrial cities.
Effects of Smog
Can result from continued exposure to smog and includes reduced visibility, eye irritation, respiratory problems, and even death.
Acid Rain
Rain that carries pollution, killing trees, damaging plants, destroying forests, and making rivers and lakes too acidic for fish.
CFCs
Chemicals used in refrigerators and spray cans that contribute to air pollution.
Ozone Layer
A region in the atmosphere protecting the Earth from harmful sun radiation that can cause skin cancer.
Ways of Decreasing Air Pollution
Using filters in factory chimneys, performing maintenance on machines and vehicles, using unleaded gasoline, and avoiding aerosols containing CFCs.
Noise Pollution
All unwanted sounds, such as those from road traffic, airplanes, construction equipment, machinery, and too many people talking.
Effects of Noise Pollution
Can cause distraction, reduced productivity, stress, sleep loss, deafness, and high blood pressure.
Measures to Lower Noise Pollution
Adding soundproof insulation, situating residential areas away from noise sources, planting trees, and using earplugs.

Ancient region located to the northeast of Greece, known for its historical significance and connection to Alexander the Great.
Armenia
An ancient kingdom located in the highlands of modern-day Turkey, east of Asia Minor. Known for its rich history and culture.
Egypt
A country in Northeast Africa, known for its ancient civilization, the Nile River, pyramids, and pharaohs.
Assyria
An ancient Mesopotamian civilization centered in the northern part of Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq and Syria).
Babylonia
A significant ancient civilization in Mesopotamia, located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (modern-day Iraq).
Persis
The region inhabited by the Persians, corresponding to present-day Iran.
Bactria
An ancient region in Central Asia, north of the Hindu Kush mountain range, encompassing parts of modern-day Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
Sogdiana
An ancient Central Asian civilization located in modern-day Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Conquered by Alexander the Great.
Media
An ancient region in northwestern Iran, inhabited by the Medes. Known for its role in ancient Persian history.
