Skeletal Muscle
A type of muscle tissue consisting of large, long, cylindrical, striated cells with many nuclei located near the periphery, responsible for voluntary body movements when attached to bone or connective tissue.
Cardiac Muscle
A type of muscle tissue with branched, cylindrical, striated cells containing a single nucleus, joined by intercalated disks with gap junctions to involuntarily pump blood in the heart.
Intercalated Disks
Specialized junctions between cardiac muscle cells that contain gap junctions.
Smooth Muscle
A type of non-striated muscle tissue with spindle-shaped cells tapered at each end and containing a single nucleus, operating under involuntary control in hollow organs, skin, and eyes.
Neuron
A nerve cell responsible for conducting electrical signals, composed of a cell body, dendrites, and an axon.
Cell Body
The portion of a neuron that contains the nucleus and serves as the site of general cell functions.
Dendrites
Structures of a neuron that usually receive stimuli that lead to electrical changes.
Axon
A long structure of a neuron that conducts electrical signals originating from its base at the cell body to its end.
Glial Cells
Support cells of the nervous system that nourish, protect, insulate, and form specialized sheaths around axons.
Tissue Membrane
A thin sheet or layer of tissue covering a structure or lining a cavity, typically consisting of epithelium resting on connective tissue.
Cutaneous Membrane
The external tissue membrane, also known as the skin, composed of stratified squamous epithelium and dense connective tissue.
Mucous Membranes
Internal tissue membranes lining cavities that open to the outside of the body, consisting of epithelial cells, a basement membrane, and loose connective tissue.
Serous Membranes
Internal tissue membranes lining cavities that do not open to the exterior, consisting of simple squamous epithelium, a basement membrane, and delicate loose connective tissue, which secrete serous fluid.
Serous Fluid
A watery fluid secreted by serous membranes that lubricates membrane surfaces and protects internal organs from friction.
Synovial Membranes
Internal tissue membranes made up only of connective tissue that line cavities of freely movable joints and produce synovial fluid.
Synovial Fluid
A slippery fluid produced by synovial membranes that reduces friction and allows smooth movement within joint cavities.
