Limitations of a single phase rectifier

A single-phase rectifier is well suited to low power and domestic applications when only a single-phase supply is available. However, higher power installations can make use of the three-phase supply, allowing the load to be distributed across three supply lines.

which way must the diode be for a half wave three phase rectifier

As with the single-phase rectifier, the diode must be forward biased in order to conduct. The relationship between the three phase voltages determines which diode conducts and thus which line provides current at any instance. The three-phase source and DC output waveforms are shown above. It is apparent that each diode conducts for 120° (one third of the cycle period). Considering the diode bias, the conducting diode is in the phase with the most positive voltage.
