When approaching a car in a parking lot, where do you approach from?

Parking lot: from the REAR

How about a car parked on a curb?

Curb: from the FRONT

How should we set up our driver seat and steering wheel?

1. Knees slightly bent

2. No closer than 10 inches to the steering wheel

3. Can see over the wheel

4. Point the wheel at your chest

5. Should be able to pivot foot from brake to accelerator 

How should we wear our seat belt?

Across the shoulder chest and hips.

How should we position our head restraint?  Why?

Top of the ears even with the midpoint of the head restraint to prevent a neck injury (whiplash).

What does BGE stand for?

Blind spot glare elimination

What does it BGE help manage?

Blind spots and glare 

How do you adjust your rearview mirror?

1. Frame the rear window

2. Can see at least 200 feet back

Where do your hands go on the steering wheel?

8 o’clock and 4 o’clock

When you park your car, should you always set the parking brake?

Yes

What is focal vision?

What is Paracentral vision?

Second narrowest field used to determine path of travel and is imperative for depth perception.

What is Peripheral vision?

Vision out to the sides where you see light and movement.

What should our visual lead time be?

AT LEAST 20 seconds

What is the footprint around a vehicle?

It is the ground area around the car that you can’t see when you are seated in the driver’s seat.

What are the 3 lane positions and what are each one used for?

1. Lane position 1 = even distance on both sides, used for normal driving.

2. Lane position 2 = more to the left of the lane, used for left turns and to avoid objects on the right side of the road.

3. Lane position 3 = more to the right used for right turns and to avoid objects on the left side of the road.

What is the most common steering method?

Push/Pull/Slide

Why don’t we cross our hands in front of the wheel?

Because of the airbags

When backing up, how many hands do you use?

1 on top of the wheel

When backing a trailer, where does your hand go?

One hand on the bottom inside of the wheel.

How does speed affect steering and vehicle balance?

The faster you go the more reactive the car is to steering movements.

What is pitch?

Car weight moves front and back.

What is Roll?

car weight moves side to side.

What is Yaw?

loss of traction in one rear wheel causing the back end of the car to slide side-to-side.

What are the different types of braking and acceleration?

1. Braking: Controlled (normal), Threshold (emergency), Trail (cornering)

2. Acceleration: Progressive (smooth), Thrust (fast and quick)

Why is depth perception important?

It lets us estimate the distance between our car and other objects.

What is ABS?

Anti-lock Brake System
