History of Psychological Treatment, Other Medical Routes for Treatment

Psychopharmacology

The scientific study of the effect of drugs on the mind and behavior.

Antipsychotic Drugs

Drugs taken to treat schizophrenia. They block dopamine.

Tardive Dyskinesia

A side effect caused by using antipsychotic drugs over time such as facial twitching

Antianxiety Drugs

Drugs taken to treat anxiety. They depress the nervous system.

Antidepressant Drugs

Drugs taken to treat depression. They increase serotonin, nonepinephrine, and dopamine.

Mood-Stabilizer Drugs

Drugs taken to treat Major Depressive Disorder.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Used to treat severe depression. A mild electrical current is applied to the patient.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

Uses magnetic fields to treat depression when other treatments are failing.

Psychosurgery

Now called neurosurgery when parts of the brain are removed and destroyed.

Lobotomy

A surgical procedure that took place in the prefrontal lobe in order to sever connections in attempt to rid patients of psychological disorders. No longer used.
