Tissue
Groups of cells located in a distinct region of the body that work together to carry out a specific function.
Histology
The study of tissues.
Avascular
Referring to epithelium that does not contain blood vessels.
Connective Tissue
The most abundant type of tissue in the human body, which binds structures, provides support, and protects organs.
Simple Epithelium
Epithelial tissue that is only one cell layer thick.
Stratified Epithelium
Epithelial tissue that is composed of two or more cell layers.
Microvilli
Fingerlike projections on the apical surface of epithelial tissue that increase surface area.
Goblet Cells
Specialized epithelial cells that produce mucus.
Chondrocytes
Mature cartilage cells located in lacunae.
Plasma
The liquid portion of blood, which is its matrix.
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells involved in transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Necrosis
Premature, pathological death of tissue due to trauma, toxins, or infection.
Serous Membranes
Membranes that line body cavities not open to the external environment, made of simple squamous epithelium.
Neoplasia
Development of a tumor, either benign or malignant.
Basement Membrane
A layer of attachment between epithelial and connective tissue that regulates the movement of materials.
Fibrosis
The formation of fibrous connective tissue (scar tissue) over injured tissue.
