How was the housing conditions in the the 1960s
People were poor, their houses were built of thatched roof or corrugated iron sheets. Some were made of straw and wood.They lived mostly in huts, wooden houses and shacks. They often face probles such heavy rain and cyclones. Their houses weren’t strong enough to withstand the strong cyclonic winds. For example, cyclone Alix and Carol caused widespread destruction making people homeless.
What did the givernment do to tackle this problem?
He set the Central Housing Authority to provide concrete houses to those who the cyclones made them homeless. He started with the Housing Reconstruction Programme. Between the year 1961 and 1970, some 14,00 houses were built.These houses were sold at subsidies prices. They could be afford by making a monthly payment over a period of 25 years.
