Power
The rate at which electrical energy is transferred or consumed, expressed in watts (W).
Resistance Symbol
Represented by the capital letter R, with values measured in ohms (Ω).
Conductance
The reciprocal of electrical resistance, representing the ease with which electric current passes through a material.
Resistor Material
Carbon is the most common material used to manufacture discrete electrical resistors.
Best Electrical Conductor
Copper is the most effective conductor among common choices such as aluminum, silicon, and carbon.
Series Cell Connection
Connecting multiple electric cells in series increases the total output voltage of the battery system.
Parallel Cell Connection
Connecting multiple electric cells in parallel increases the total current capacity while maintaining nominal voltage.
Diode
A semiconductor device that allows current to flow primarily in one direction, commonly used to convert alternating current (AC) to pulsating direct current (DC).
Rectifier
The circuit component function performed by a diode to convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC).
Temperature Effect on Resistance
The property wherein the electrical resistance of a conductive material varies in response to changes in temperature.
Electromagnetic Deflection
The change in direction of a magnetic compass needle caused by the magnetic field generated around an adjacent current-carrying wire.
Electrodynamometer
A meter movement capable of measuring both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) signals.
Thermocouple
A sensor device that generates direct current (DC) voltage when exposed to heat.
Ammeter Shunt
A low-resistance resistor connected in parallel with a meter movement to bypass excess current and expand the ammeter's measurement range.
Voltmeter Sensitivity
A rating of a voltmeter's internal resistance relative to its full-scale voltage range, expressed in ohms per volt (Ω/V).
FETVM
Field-Effect Transistor Voltmeter; a voltage measuring device featuring extremely high input impedance that draws negligible current from the circuit under test.
Fuse
A protective device in an electrical circuit that melts and opens the circuit when current exceeds a safe limit.
Utility Meter
An instrument whose readout indicates total accumulated electrical energy consumed over a period.
Digital Frequency Counter
A precise measuring instrument that displays signal frequency in numerical digital format.
VU Meter
Volume Unit meter; an instrument designed to display audio signal power levels and volume, but not used to measure total energy.
Illumination Meter Movement
The internal meter mechanism in a light meter that measures electric current generated by a light sensor.
Oscilloscope
An electronic instrument used to display, measure, and analyze voltage signal waveforms, peak levels, frequency, and phase relationships over time.
Ohm's Law Scaling
According to I=RV, doubling the applied voltage while halving the circuit resistance causes the current to increase fourfold.
