Hair shaft
The portion of a hair that extends above the skin surface; the visible part of the hair.
Pore of sweat gland duct
The opening on the skin surface through which sweat exits the sweat gland duct.
Tactile corpuscle
A light touch receptor located in the dermal papillae; detects fine touch.
Sebaceous gland
Gland that secretes sebum to lubricate hair and skin.
Arrector pili muscle
Small muscle attached to hair follicles that causes hair to stand erect when contracted.
Sweat gland duct
Duct that carries sweat from the sweat gland to the skin surface.
Hair follicle
Structure within the skin that surrounds the hair root and from which hair grows.
Lamellar corpuscle
Pacinian corpuscle; a deep pressure and vibration receptor in the dermis.
Nerve fibers
Bundles of neurons that carry sensory information and signals to/from the skin.
Sweat gland
Gland that produces sweat for thermoregulation and waste excretion.
Artery
Blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart; in the skin, part of cutaneous circulation.
Cutaneous vein
Vein located in the skin that returns blood to the heart.
Fat
Adipose tissue in the subcutaneous layer; provides insulation and energy storage.
Cutaneous plexus
Network of blood vessels in the dermis that supplies the skin.
Accessory structures
Skin appendages such as hair, glands, and associated muscles included in the integumentary system.
