complete dominance
a relationship in which one allele is completely dominant over another
incomplete dominance
Cases in which one allele is not completely dominant over another. There is a blended heterozygou phenotype.
Codominance
situation in which BOTH alleles of a gene contribute to the phenotype of the organism
multiple alleles
A gene that has more than two alleles
Allele
Different forms of a gene
Trait
A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes.
sex-linked traits
Traits controlled by genes located on sex chromosomes.
paternity test
A child's allele (band in DNA profile) must come from either the father or the mother. To confirm or discredit a person as the father.
Blood type (group)
One of the classes (as A, B, AB, or O) into which individual vertebrates and especially human beings or their blood can be separated on the basis of the presence or absence of specific antigens in the blood.
antigen on RBC
A, B or RH protein marker that determines blood type
gel electrophoresis
technique for sorting molecules or fragments of molecules by length
Genotype
An organism's genetic makeup, or allele combinations, made of 2 alleles.
Phenotype
An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits.
Who killed Mrs. Fletcher?
Hah- wouldn't you want to know!
XX
female sex chromosomes
Y chromosome
chromosome lacking genes in comparison to the X
Rh factor
Refers to the presence or absence of the Rh antigen on red blood cells.
Carrier
A person who has one recessive allele for a trait, but does not have the trait.
Pedigree
A diagram that shows the occurrence of a genetic trait in several generations of a family.
genetic profiling
the procedure of analyzing the DNA in samples of a person's body tissue or body fluid for the purpose of identification
