1

what is the cerebrum

carries out conscious activities (hearing, speech, memory)
- cerebum is 2 halves into cerebum hemispheres
- cerebum halves are attached via callosum
- right hemisphere controls left side of body, left hemisphere controls right side of body

New cards
2

what is the cerebrum (II)

has thin outer layer known as cerebral cortex (grey matter)
- highly folded to increase surface area = greater number of neurones = more neurone connections made = greater ability to carry out complex behaviours

New cards
3

what is the hypothalamus

monitors blood flow into brain & release hormones from itself/pituitary gland
- body temperature = initiates response if temperature is low/high
- osmoregulation = initiates response if blood is concentrated via ADH

New cards
4

what is the hypothalamus (II)

- digestive activity = monitors hormones controlling appetite & secretion of digestive enzymes
- endocrine function = pitutary gland release hormones to control processes

New cards
5

what is the pituitary gland

produce range of hormones = affect endocrine glands or regulate processes
- has 2 sections = anterior pituitary (produce & release hormones) & posterior pituitary (stores & release hormones from hypothalamus)

New cards
6

what is the cerebellum

coordinates movement & balance

New cards
7

what is the medulla oblongata

contains co-ordination centres that control unconscious functions (i.e. cardiac rate, respiratory rate)
