Palmate

Leaves radiate from one central point

ex.) buckeye

Bipinnate

twice pinnate; twice-divided in a pinnate structure

ex.) Devil’s walking stick, Charberry, mimosa

Trifoliate

three leaflets from a central point of view

ex.) poison ivy, poison oak

Tripinnate

completely divided three times in a pinnate manner

ex.) no Mississippi native tree

Native

naturally occurring species that belong and made up vegetative communities

Invassive

not naturally occurring species that out compete native plants and damage vegetative communities

ex.) Chinese privet hedge, Japanese privet hedge, Autumn olive(Russian olive), Mimosa (Chinese Silk tree), tallow tree, Cogan grass, kudzu, Callery pear (Bradford pear), wisteria

Naturalized

Species that does not occur naturally in area but exist without harming native vegetative communities

ex.) Chinese Fridge tree, Chinese Pistache

Phyllotaxy

Leaf arrangement on a stem

Alternate (spiral, distichous)

one leaf per node

ex.) oaks, beaches, birch, yellow poplar, sweetgum

Compound Leaf Alternate

One leaf per node still; with compound leaves

ex.) hickory, pecans, walnuts,

Opposite

leaves directly across

ex.) MAD(maples, ashes, dogwood) BUCK(eye)

can also be compound

Catalpa

Three or more leaves per node

ex.) catalpa, Royal palowina
