Neutral stimulus provokes biologically important stimulus → reflexive response
Eventually, neutral stimulus causes reflexive response through association
Neutral “conditioned stimulus” is immediately followed by an “unconditioned stimulus” that is important to the animal, resulting in a response.
Stimuli are associated long enough that the conditioned stimulus elicits the response without the unconditioned stimulus
