Uterine Involution
The process of the uterus returning to its pre-pregnancy size, typically taking about 6 weeks.
Colostrum
A type of initial milk produced immediately after childbirth, rich in antibodies.
Puerperal Diuresis
Increased urine output after childbirth, typically between 2000-3000 ml.
Taking in
The initial phase postpartum where the mother is passive and allows others to make decisions.
Taking hold
The active phase postpartum where the mother starts to take responsibility for her care and her newborn.
Lochia
The vaginal discharge that occurs after childbirth, consisting of blood, uterus tissue, and mucus.
Assessing the Perineum
An assessment performed postpartum to check for redness, edema, ecchymosis, drainage, and approximation of sutures.
Postpartum Blues
A transient period of mood swings, weepiness, and anger that may occur postpartum, often influenced by hormonal changes.
Pitocin
A medication often administered postpartum to promote uterine contraction and reduce bleeding.
Episiotomy
A surgical incision made in the perineum during childbirth to facilitate delivery.
