VLANs, Trunks, ROAS, and Multilayer Switches Vocabulary

Vocabulary flashcards covering switch VLAN configuration, trunking, router-on-a-stick (ROAS), and multilayer switch commands based on the lecture notes.

show vlan brief

Command that shows what vlans exist on the switch and what interfaces are in each vlan.

show interfaces vlan #

Command that shows exact hardware info of a certain vlan when it is on a certain interface.

show interfaces status

Command that shows status of each interface on switch.

switchport mode access

Command that sets interface to access port.

switchport access vlan (#)

Command that creates vlan on interface.

vlan (#)

Command that enters config. mode of the vlan.

name (name)

Command that names your vlan.

Trunks

Interface connections that carry multiple VLAN connections over one interface without needing a subnet at Layer 2.

VLAN Tags

How packets know which vlan to send traffic to over a trunk port.

802.1q

The most commonly used vlan tagging.

VID / VLAN ID

Identifier that is 12 bits in length, with a range of 1-4094.

Normal VLANs

VLANs in the range of 1-1005.

Default VLANs on Cisco Switches

VLANs 1, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005.

Extended VLANs

VLANs in the range of 1006-4094.

Native VLAN

The VLAN on a trunk that receives untagged trunk traffic; default is VLAN 1 on all trunk ports.

switchport mode trunk

Command that makes interface a trunk w/ 802.1Q.

show interfaces trunk

Command that shows interfaces on a trunk.

switchport trunk allowed vlan (#)

Command to create allowed list of vlans on a trunk.

switchport trunk native vlan (#)

Command to add/configure native vlan on trunk.

Sub interfaces

Interfaces used by routers to make one physical router port act like multiple router interfaces.

Multilayer Switch

A mix between router and switch; it is a switch that can route.

SVI (Switch Virtual Interfaces)

Virtual interface tied to a VLAN (not a port) used for inter-vlan routing on a multilayer switch.

no switchport

Command that sets interface from Layer 2 to Layer 3.

ip routing

Command that enables inter-VLAN routing globally.
