Anatomy
The study of the body's structure, including physical characteristics, components, organization, and relationships.
Physiology
The study of how body structures function together to provide a comprehensive understanding of what the body is made of and how it works.
Anatomical Position
A body position described by standing upright, facing forward with arms at the sides, palms facing forward, and feet flat on the ground and pointing forward.
Prone
Describing a reclining body lying face down.
Supine
Describing a reclining body lying faceup.
Superior
Directional term meaning towards the head or the upper part of the structure.
Inferior
Directional term meaning away from the head, or the lower part of a structure.
Anterior
Directional term meaning nearer to or at the front of the body.
Posterior
Directional term meaning near to or at the back of the body.
Medial
Directional term meaning nearer to the midline of the body.
Lateral
Directional term meaning farther from the midline.
Intermediate
Directional term meaning between two structures.
Ipsilateral
Directional term referring to two structures on the same side of the body.
Contralateral
Directional term referring to two structures on the opposite side.
Proximal
Directional term meaning near to the attachment of the limb.
Distal
Directional term meaning farther from the attachment of the limb.
Synovial joints
Freely movable joints within which anatomical movements occur.
Flexion
Anatomical movement involving a decrease in angle between bones.
Extension
Anatomical movement involving an increase in angle between bones.
Hyperextension
Anatomical movement involving extension beyond the anatomical position.
Abduction
Movement of a bone away from the middle.
Adduction
Movement of a bone toward the middle.
Circumduction
Movement of the distal end of a body part in a circle.
Rotation
Anatomical movement where a bone revolves around its own longitudinal axis.
Medial Rotation
Rotation towards the midline.
Lateral Rotation
Rotation away from the midline.
Elevation
Superior movement of a body part.
Depression
Inferior movement of a body part.
Protraction
Anterior movement of a body part.
Retraction
Posterior movement of a body part.
Inversion
Movement of the sole towards the middle.
Eversion
Movement of the sole away from the middle.
Dorplexion
Upward movement of the foot, with toes pointing upwards.
Plantar Flexion
Downward movement of the foot, with toes pointing downward.
