What is the general adaptation syndrome
A model of the body's stress response, consisting of three stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion
Who discovered the general adaptation syndrome
Selye. He initially looked at stress as a psychological response. He experimented with rats, subjecting them to various stressors (extreme cold or surgical injury). He found that no matter what the stressor was, the response was always the same. He concluded that stress was a general response of the body to any stressor
What is an alarm reaction
It's a stage that prepares the body to respond a stressor, whether real or imagined. Stressors can include demanding work environments, relationship problems, or significant life changes
What happens during the alarm reaction stage
The body experiences a number of physiological changes, these include; increased heart rate, release hormones, pupils dilate
What is resistance
When the body attempts to repair itself after a stressful event. during this stage, heart rate and blood pressure will return to normal if the stressful situation has passed
What is exhaustion
The body is no longer able to cope with stress and may experience fatigue, burnout, depression, anxiety and decreased stress tolerance
