Suggested Screening Timelines

Breast Cancer

Begin mammograms at age 40

Cervical Cancer

Age 21–29, Pap test every 3 years, Age 30–65, Pap test every 3 years or Pap + HPV testing every 5 years

Colorectal Cancer

Start at age 45, screening may include FOBT or colonoscopy

Dental Examination

Yearly dental exam and cleaning

Lung Cancer

Age 50–80 with a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years, annual low-dose CT scan

Diabetes

Blood glucose testing every 3 years for adults, or sooner based on risk factors

Cholesterol

More frequent testing if there is a family history of high cholesterol

Bone Density

Postmenopausal patients under 65 at increased risk for osteoporosis

Dilated Eye Examination

For patients at increased risk of eye disease, including diabetes, family history of glaucoma, African American patients, and age over 40

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

One-time ultrasound screening for males age 65–75 who have ever smoked

Hepatitis C

Test patients with risk factors, including those born 1945–1965 or with certain medical histories

HIV

Screen adolescents and adults ages 15–65, or younger/older patients at increased risk

Prostate Specific Antigen

Men age 50, age 45 for high risk
