Nouns

Names a person, place, thing or idea

Verb

Expresses an action or state

Adjective

Describes a noun

Adverb

Describes a verb, adjective or adverb

Preposition

Connects a noun or pronoun to another word. Shows space, time, or movement of the noun (e.g. On the table)

Conjunction

Joins words, phrases or clauses (e.g. and)

Determiners

Appears at the very front of a noun phrase to limit or define the noun (e.g. The book, a cat)

Interjection

A short expression showing emotion (e.g. Oh!)

Neologism

A newly created word (e.g. selfie)

Borrowing

A word taken from another language (e.g. sushi)

Commonisation

A brand name that becomes a general term

Nominalisation

Turning another word class into a noun
