Betty said After Betty is found unconscious, the town quickly assumes witchcraft is responsible. Fear spreads before any evidence is presented, showing how easily panic can replace rational thinking.

Proctor When given the chance to save himself through a false confession, Proctor refuses.
"Adultery, John."
When Elizabeth says this because john didn't say the 7th commandments
"I denounce these proceedings."
Reverend Hale to stop all the innocent deaths this is his redemption
"Devil's man!"
Unable to withstand the pressure, Mary abandons the truth and accuses Proctor of being aligned with the Devil.
"Because it is my name!"
Although he will die, Proctor chooses honesty over survival. This is Miller's strongest challenge to fear and conformity.
"A wind, a cold wind,
The girls pretend Mary is attacking them with witchcraft. Their performance overwhelms logic and evidence.
"I cannot, they'll turn on me."
Mary knows the girls are lying but fears the consequences of exposing them. Fear prevents justice from being served.
"I saw Goody Good with the Devil!"
To avoid punishment, Abigail starts naming people as witches. The other girls join in, creating the first wave of hysteria.
"She is blackening my name in the village!"
Abigail accuses Elizabeth Proctor partly because she wants Elizabeth removed so she can be with John Proctor.
"I cannot lie no more."
