Associative Property of Multiplication

A property stating that when factors are grouped in different ways using parentheses, the product remains the same, such as $(4 \times 2) \times 2 = 4 \times (2 \times 2)$.

Commutative Property of Multiplication

A property stating that changing the order of the factors does not change the product, such as $3 \times 5 = 5 \times 3$.

Multiplicative Identity Element

The number $1$, which keeps any number the same when multiplied by it.

Decomposing Factors

A strategy where a factor is broken down into a product of smaller factors, such as decomposing $30$ into $3 \times 10$, to make mental multiplication easier.

Zero Pattern Rule in Multiplication

A multiplication rule where the product has the same number of zeroes as the factor containing zeroes (such as multiples of $10$, $100$, or $1{,}000$), unless the basic fact product itself ends in a zero.
