Defense Mechanisms
Automatic, usually unconscious psychological processes that protect a person from anxiety or uncomfortable feelings.
Denial
A defense mechanism in which an individual refuses to accept reality.
Projection
A defense mechanism in which an individual attributes their own unacceptable feelings or impulses to someone else.
Displacement
A defense mechanism involving the transfer of feelings from the original source to a safer target.
Rationalization
A defense mechanism in which a person creates a logical-sounding explanation to avoid the real reason for an outcome or action.
Regression
A defense mechanism where an individual returns to behaviors from an earlier developmental stage when stressed.
Repression
A defense mechanism characterized by unconsciously blocking painful thoughts or memories.
Suppression
A defense mechanism where an individual consciously postpones thinking about something distressing.
Reaction Formation
A defense mechanism in which a person behaves in the exact opposite way from an unacceptable feeling.
Sublimation
A defense mechanism where an unacceptable impulse is channeled into a socially acceptable activity.
Undoing
A defense mechanism in which an individual attempts to symbolically cancel an unacceptable thought or act.
Intellectualization
A defense mechanism where a person focuses strictly on facts and logic to avoid emotional content.
Identification
A defense mechanism in which a person adopts traits or behaviors of another person.
Eustress
Stress associated with positive events or emotions.
Distress
Stress associated with negative feelings or events.
Problem-Focused Coping
A coping style that attempts to change the stressor or directly solve the problem.
Emotion-Focused Coping
A coping style that attempts to manage the emotional response to a stressor.
Preinteraction Phase
The phase of the nurse-patient relationship before first contact where the nurse reviews available information and self-assesses personal feelings, biases, anxiety, and expectations.
Orientation / Introductory Phase
The initial meeting phase of the nurse-patient relationship focused on establishing roles, purpose, confidentiality, expectations, boundaries, trust, and a contract.
Working Phase
The phase of the nurse-patient relationship where trust is established and the patient actively identifies and works on problems while building coping skills.
Termination / Resolution Phase
The final phase of the nurse-patient relationship where progress is reviewed, feelings about ending are discussed, independence is reinforced, and future resources are connected.
Transference
The process where a patient unconsciously redirects feelings from a significant person in their past onto the nurse.
Countertransference
The nurse's emotional or behavioral response to a patient that may be influenced by unresolved personal feelings or triggered by the patient's transference.
