Ocular lens
Part where eyes look through that magnifies the specimen 10×.
Arm
Supports the ocular and objective lenses.
Base
Platform that supports the entire microscope.
Objective lens
Magnifies specimen with various magnifications (4×, 10×, 40×, 100×).
Mechanical Stage
Platform that holds the specimen slide, equipped with clips to hold the slide in place, which can move left to right and back and forth.
Lamp
Produces light for viewing specimens.
Power cord
Provides power for the lamp when plugged in.
Stage Clip
Holds the specimen slide in place on the stage.
Stage knob
Moves the stage and specimen slide left to right and front to back.
Rheostat
Controls light level being produced by the lamp.
Coarse focus knob
Knob used to make large changes in focus; especially important for 4× and 10× objective lenses.
Fine focus knob
Knob used to make small changes in focus; especially important for 40× and 100× objective lenses.
Power switch
Turns the microscope on and off.
Diaphragm
Iris mechanism that controls the amount of light that reaches the specimen.
Condenser
Focuses the light from the lamp onto the specimen.
Condenser knob
Controls how far the condenser is from the slide.
Revolving nosepiece
Holds the objective lenses immediately above the specimen and rotates them into place to adjust magnification.
Scanning objective
Objective lens with 4× magnification, yielding a total magnification of 10×(4)=40×.
Low objective lens
Objective lens with 10× magnification, yielding a total magnification of 10×(10)=100×.
High power objective
Objective lens with 40× magnification, yielding a total magnification of 10×(40)=400×.
Oil immersion objective
Objective lens with 100× magnification, yielding a total magnification of 10×(100)=1000×.
