Germination
The process by which a seed emerges from dormancy and begins to sprout.
Sexual reproduction
A reproductive process involving the fusion of male and female gametes, resulting in genetically diverse offspring.
Self-pollination
A reproductive mechanism where pollen from the same flower fertilizes its ovules, leading to inbreeding.
Cross-pollination
The transfer of pollen between different plants leading to genetic diversity.
Pollination
The transfer of male pollen grains to a female stigma.
Fertilization
The fusion of haploid gametes, leading to the formation of a zygote and eventually a seed.
Self-incompatibility
Mechanisms in plants that prevent self-fertilization and promote genetic variation.
Epicotyl
The embryonic shoot of a seed.
Radicle
The embryonic root of a seed.
Cotyledon
The part of a seed that acts as a food storage for the developing plant.
Testa
The outer seed coat that protects the seed.
Micropyle
A pore in the seed that allows water absorption to initiate germination.
