Ecumene
The portion of the Earth with permanent human settlement.
Arithmetic Density
Calculated by dividing a region’s population by its total area.
Physiological Population Density
Calculated by dividing population by the amount of arable land.
Agricultural Density
Calculated as the number of farmers divided by the area of arable land.
Population Concentrations
Two-thirds of the world’s population are concentrated in four regions: East Asia, South Asia, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
Sparsely Populated Regions
Areas that people generally avoid; includes dry lands, wet lands, cold lands, and high lands.
Carrying Capacity
The maximum population size that an environment can sustainably support.
LDC
Countries with lower income levels, often facing challenges like food scarcity.
MDC
Countries with higher income levels, generally more food secure and waste conscious.
