Chemistry
the study of the composition, structures, and properties of matter and the changes they undergo
Chemical
any substance produced by or used in a chemical process that has a definite composition (e.g. water, sucrose, carbon dioxide)
Matter
anything with mass and that takes up space
Physical property
a characteristic displayed by a sample without undergoing any change in its composition (e.g. color, odor, solubility)
Intensive property
does not depend on sample size (e.g. boiling point, density)
Extensive property
depends on sample size (e.g. mass, volume, length)
Chemical property
a characteristic displayed by a sample of matter as it undergoes a change in composition (e.g. rusting, tarnishing, exploding)
Physical change
does not affect composition of a sample
Chemical change (reaction)
changes the composition or molecular structure of a sample
Exothermic reaction
heat released
Endothermic reaction
heat absorbed
