How does a synapse function?

When an impulse travels along the axon of the presynaptic neuron, the impulse stimulates the synaptic vesicles to fuse with the presynaptic membrane. The fused area then ruptures, causing the vesicle to release their neurotransmitter molecules, which diffuse across the synaptic cleft and bind to the postsynaptic membrane.
