Population of Interest (POI)
The collection of all individuals/objects that possess the variable of interest.
Parameter
A numerical summary of a variable’s distribution in the POI
Simple Random Sample (SRS) of size = n
is a sample chosen in such a way that:
a) every individual in the population has an equal probability of making it into the chosen sample
b) every sample of a given size n has an equal probability of actually being the sample chosen
Repeated Sampling
The abstract process of creating all possible SRS’s of a given size from a given POI
Statistic (of choice)
A numerical summary of a variable’s distribution in a given sample. Such as X= a sample count, p-hat=sample proportion and x-bar= a sample mean
Random Variable
A variable that counts numerical outcomes of a random phenomenon. Namely reduces the sample space into a count.
Sampling Distribution of a Statistic
is the distribution of all possible values of a statistic from all possible SRS’s of a given size = n
Examples include:
a. Sampling distribution of a sample count, X.
b. Sampling distribution of a sample proportion, p-hat.
c. Sampling distribution of a sample mean, x-bar
The Golden Axiom
States that the center of a sampling distribution is the corresponding parameter, regardless of sample size.
Sampling Variability
The variability of a statistic from all SRS's from a given POI in repeated sampling. A statistic varies from SRS to SRS for given samples of size n
