Colombian Exchange
Global trade between the New World, Old world, and African initiated by Columbus’s findings in America. Things like gold, silver, agriculture, and disease were brought to and from the continents, and slaves from Africa.
Treaty of Tordesillas
Europeans longed to possess the valuable goods that were discovered in the Americas. In the treaty, Spain and Portugal claimed goods from the New World. → Africa & Asia territories.
Conquistadores
Spanish men who traveled through Mexico, Peru and the Americans in 1492 to religiously conquer the land. They wanted to spread their religion and gain wealth.
Pope’s rebellion
Roman Catholic missionaries angered native Indians in 1680 and caused an Indian uprising. They felt their native religions were being suppressed. They destroyed catholic churches and killed many priests and Spanish settlers. In New Mexico.
mestizos
People of mixed European and Indian heritage when Spaniards entered Mexico and inter-married with the natives.
encomienda
An institution allowing colonists to control Indians with a promise in return to Christianize them, basically a cover up for slavery. An effort to better prepare for the Spanish invasion of mainland American.
