What is natural immunity?
acquired from exposure to pathogens and breastfeeding
What is Artificial Immunity?
acquired with medical intervention such as a vaccine
What is active immunity?
where the body produces its own antibodies and creates memorty cells to provide long-lasting protection
What is passive immunity?
the body receives pre-made antibodies from an external source, providing immediate but temporary protection but is temporary because no memory cells are made
What is the difference between Primary and Secondary Lymphoid Tissue?
primary are the sites where immune cells are produced or matures, generally the thymus and bone marrow whereas secondary are sites where mature immune cells are activate by foreign antigens, generally lymph nodes, spleen and tonsils
Explain the role of lymph nodes in antigen recognition?
they are a centralised hub where APCs carry captured antigens to the lymph nodes presenting them to naive B and T cells. clonal selection occurs meaning specific lymphocyte with complementary receptor binds to the antigen, activating adaptive immune response
