Independent states
the primary building blocks of the world political map
nation
a group of people with a shared culture, language, history, homeland, and self-determination
nation-states
A sovereign state with a relatively homogenous population that has shared language, culture, and history
stateless nations
nations without a state of their own, often seeking self-determination and recognition.
multinational states
A state that has more than one nation within its border
multistate nations
A nation that has a state of its own, but also resides in other states
autonomous regions
areas within a state that have a degree of self-governance and independence from the central government.
semi-autonomous regions
Regions that have a degree of self-governance but are still subject to the authority of a larger state.
sovereignty
The authority of a state to govern itself or another state, free from external interference.
self-determination
the right of a group to determine its own political status and pursue its own economic, social, and cultural development.
Colonialism
A policy or practice of acquiring full or partial control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
imperialism
A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force, often involving the domination of foreign territories.
independence movements
efforts by groups or regions within a country to gain political autonomy and establish sovereignty from a governing authority
neocolonialism
the practice of using economic, political, or cultural pressures to control or influence other countries, often following the end of formal colonial rule.
shatterbelts
A geographic aea that is caught between conflicting forces or regions, often characterized by instability and fragmentation.
choke points
A strategic narrow route providing passage through or to another region
Territoriality
the connection of people, their culture, and their economic systems to the land.
Devolution
The transfer of power from a national government to a regional government power is broken up and spread between lower organizations
Balkanization
when a state breaks up into different states often due to conflict within the state
Decolonization
the process by which a colony becomes independent of the colonizing country
State
geographic area that has a permanent population, defined borders, sovereign government, and is recognized by other states
city-state
a sovereign state with political and economic control over surroundings
Secondary sector
activities that take raw resources to produce or manufacture products of greater value
Tertiary sector
activities that provide a service for other individuals
