What are the 7 characteristics of living organisms?
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Reproduction
Growth
Excrement
Nutrient
Define movement.
Action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place
Define respiration. What is its equation formula?
Series of chemical reactions in cells that breaks down nutrient molecules to release energy for metabolism
Glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water (+ energy - Adenosine Trophosphate - ATP)
What is the difference between aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic - with oxygen - when stored carbs run low, breaks down protein into amino acids to create energy
Anaerobic - without oxygen
Define sensitivity.
Ability of organisms to detect changes in internal and external environment and make appropriate responses
Define growth.
Permanent increase in dry mass due to increase in cell size or cell number or both
Become complicated and change shape
Define reproduction.
Ability to make new organisms of the same species as themselves
How do single-celled organisms reproduce differently from many-celled organisms?
Single-celled - binary fusion - keep dividing into two
Many-celled - reproduce sexually or asexually
Define excretion / egestion.
Removal of waste products from metabolism, toxic materials and substances in excess of requirements from organisms
Define nutrition. How is it different for plants and animals?
Intake of materials for growth, development and energy
Plants - thru light, carbon dioxide, water, ions - photosynthesis
Animals - thru organic compounds, water, ions - consuming other organisms
What are species?
Smallest natural group of organism - reproduce to produce fertile offsprings
What happens when animals of different species reproduce together?
Produce infertile offsprings (often of unnatural conditions)
What is binomial nomenclature?
Internationally agreed system of naming organisms - scientific name made of two parts, genus(1st word with capital letter) and species(2nd word with small letter)
State what the meaning of classification of organisms is. Then list them.
Method of scientific taxonomy used to group and categorize organisms into groups - easier to study them
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
