The cause of a disease may be
- intrinsic (age, gender, inheritance)
- extrinsic (smoking/illegal drug use)
- idiopathic (cause unknown)
Recent discovery involving HPV
HPV results in most cases of cervical cancer in females but now there is a vaccine to help control it
Diabetic patients can now
measure their blood glucose with a computerized device quickly and efficiently

Symptoms are
subjective measurements such as nausea, pain, and dizziness
Signs are
objective measurements such as blood pressure, fever, MMT measurements, ROM measurements, and pulse
A prognosis may include
1. the chances for complete recovery
2. predict the permanent loss of function
3. probability of survival
Congenital and hereditary diseases
- caused by developmental disturbances
- examples are hemophilia and congenital heart disease due to rubella
Degenerative diseases
- cause degeneration of body parts
- examples are arthritis and arterioscelrosis
Inflammatory diseases
- the body reacts to injury or harmful agents with inflammation
- examples are pneumonia, sore throat, and hay fever
Metabolic diseases
- cause disturbance in normal metabolic process in body
- examples include diabetes, thyroid conditions, and fluid and electrolyte imbalances
Neoplastic diseases
- characterized by abnormal cell growth and formation of tumors (benign and malignant)

- uses injections of compounds containing isotopes to provide information about metabolic activities
- sites of metabolism and blood flow to specific organs
Radioisotope test
utilize radioactive materials to determine various body functions and states
Ultrasound procedures
- map echoes produced by high-frequency sound waves transmitted into the body
- used for many procedures,
- safer than radiologic studies

designed to prevent illness before it actually develops
Chemoprevention
the use of drugs or other agents to inhibit or prevent disease
Preventative Oncology
primary and secondary methods of prevention
Three categories of preventative medicine
