The Diet (Parliament)

The national legislature of Japan, formally responsible for nominating the Prime Minister.

Cold War

A period of geopolitical tension from 1945 to 1991 between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies, the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc.

Kuomintang (KMT)

Also known as the Nationalist Party of China, a major political party in the Republic of China that was the sole party in China during the Republican Era from 1928 to 1949 before retreating to Taiwan on 7 December 1949.

Far Eastern Commission

A commission consisting of 13 member countries established at the Moscow Conference in December 1945 to supervise the occupation of Japan.

Supreme Commander for the Allied Forces (SCAP)

The title held by General MacArthur, who headed the Allied occupation of Japan.

Treaty of San Francisco

An agreement signed in September 1951 under which American occupying forces were withdrawn from Japan in April 1952.

Chinese Communist Party (CCP)

The ruling political party in China from 1949 onwards following its victory in the Chinese Civil War.

Moscow Conference in 1945

A December 1945 meeting where Allied countries agreed that the occupation of Japan would be supervised by the 13-member Far Eastern Commission.
